What is a Discipleship Group?
Discipleship Groups are small groups of people that meet regularly to ask the question, “How is it with your soul?” Meetings are designed to help Christians share their spiritual journey, find encouragement, and grow their faith.
Elements of a Discipleship Group
Community
We believe God designed us not only to be in relationship with Him, but also with others. When it comes to a relationship with God, there are both individual and communal components. The greatest spiritual growth happens when we belong to a community of people who will love, care for, and guide one another. “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17)
Prayer
When we pray, we acknowledge our need for God’s presence and intervention in our lives through the Holy Spirit. We offer Him our praise and admiration, repent of our sins, ask for help, and yield to His will. Some of the best prayer happens when we pray together in community.
Scripture
If we have any hope of knowing God’s desire for our life, we must study the Bible. From it, we learn that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ and how we live in response to God’s grace. For this reason, Discipleship Groups focus on both studying and obeying Scripture, so we might “be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” (James 1:22)
Growth
Discipleship Groups are also meant to fulfill the Great Commission – to make new disciples of Jesus Christ. (Matt 28:16-20) We hope that faith development will empower members to share their faith with others, incorporating them into the body of Christ. In this way, Discipleship Groups are a great way to grow the Kingdom of God.
